Applying to the Lab

Applying for Lab Access

All majors and class standings are welcome! Just follow the steps below! If you have any questions, please email ece-openlab@illinois.edu.

  1. Fill out the application form.
  2. Complete Division of research Safety : LABORATORY SAFETY TRAINING, (Supervisor: OpenLab). Use your netID to log in and save the resulting certificate as a PDF.
  3. Upload the training certificate PDF.
  4. Attend a safety orientation and tour of the lab. Show up at the lab's double doors in ECEB 2024 at one of the tour times on the calendar. Please be on time, and bring a pen!
  5. You will then receive 24/7 PROX card access to the lab and building!

Apply to be a Lab Monitor

Applications for being an OpenLab monitor are currently closed. Check back around the beginning of next semester!


So you want to be an OpenLab Student Monitor? You can submit your application here! Lab monitors will be required to work at least two 2 hour shifts in the OpenLab 12-10pm during any day of the week.
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Helping students with their projects.
  • Training on use of OpenLab equipment - laser cutter, vinyl cutter, 3D printers, etc.
  • Keeping the lab organized and clean.
  • Enforcing the “No Homework Rule” so there's always space for projects.
  • Promoting safe practices in the lab, so that nobody hurts themselves!
  • Making the OpenLab awesome, giving suggestions where you think it could be improved.

  • Creating signs
  • Creating adverts to display on the ECEB displays
